RED IS THE NEW BLACK

This project is based on the following cultural milestones:

  1. An investigation of the dream world;
  2. Research of victorian costume morphologies;
  3. Aesthetics, the message, the story of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” designed in the near future, based on the Roman consistency of the same name, written by Margaret Atwood.

The starting point was the idea of a maiden uniform with elements from the Victorian era. The introduction of Victorian elements is related to a personal concern for that aesthetics. The products are structured to send to that style. The severity of the forms is sweetened by some refined elegance, and the styling is driven to a sophisticated area.

It starts from a character fighting against preconceptions, social constructs that restrict freedom, the right to express themselves, the possibility to stand out. The uniform of the maids in this scenario with apocalyptic valences is red, with little white accents. It is both classical and modern, strict and elegant, its “cunning” sends to something sinister, to a macabre secret. These contrasts are used in the project to highlight the identity crisis of the character caught in an intellectual, perverse game.

Red is a symbol of this inner conflict. That is why it is a color found in all clothing ensembles. Clothes that appear in the dream can be seen as a representation of the personality we hide or do not assume in everyday life. The clothing pieces have Victorian elements that rebuild the idea of uniform. Extravagant elements and pearls are inserted in some parts to highlight certain anatomical features. Pearls, in a dream, are a sign of luck, of abundance. In fact, they can embrace darker meanings.
